Viewer Comments: GERD - Proton Pump InhibitorsViewer Comments & ReviewsGERD - Proton Pump InhibitorsThe eMedicineHealth physician editors ask:Heartburn symptoms caused by GERD are usually relieved by drugs called proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, Nexium, Zegerid); however, proton pump inhibitors sometimes do not work well. If your symptoms were not relieved by treatment with proton pump inhibitors, can you please describe your GERD symptoms that did not improve? If you have other treatments that have been effective, please comment on those.

My symptoms include intense spasmodic pain in my stomach and painful belching. Nexium brought some relief, but I just had a bad episode last night that has continued to a lesser degree this morning, even after taking my pill. Eating sometimes brings relief.

I get a burning sensation in my throat which causes me to cough uncontrollably and causes me to gag and vomit. I have sleepless nights due to the coughing. My doctor prescribed me Prilosec two months ago and I'm on a low fat diet.

I have suffered from acid reflux since 2000. I have been on Aciphex since 2002, a pill a day. For the last year I take it every other day and it truly helps my condition. I tried other's Prilosec and Prevacid and these did not help and also made me very constipated. I do worry about the long term effects of taking Aciphex. I can't go more than one day without taking it. I get so much acid reflux that it feels as if I am choking specially if I am laying down. I have learned not to eat certain foods and or drinks that will bring it on. I am now 61 years old. At the beginning I was diagnosed with esophagitis and chronic GERD. Related Reading: esophagitis

I have had GERD for years. I went thru a bunch of medications and finally Reglan was the one that worked great. Then my gastroenterologist took me off of it because of possible bad side effects of Parkinson-like symptoms that don't go away after stopping the drug.

I take Protonix once daily in the morning. However, after experiencing an increase of symptoms due to consumption of alcohol and other triggers (spicy food etc) I began taking it twice daily. Even though I was taking it twice daily I still experienced acid rising in my stomach, burning in the back of my throat, feeling full quickly, at other times intense hunger or unsettled feeling in my stomach. Drinking skim milk first thing in the morning, with every meal, and before bed has helped reduce my symptoms significantly. Eating 2 bananas a day has also helped.

I started taking one of each, Zantac and Prilosec, morning and night about two years ago. My medications worked until about a month ago. I had terrible heartburn and shooting pains in my arms that would wake me up at night. I'm trying to change my diet and my habits, such as no smoking, no drinking, no eating spicy foods. I am also not eating after 8pm; I'm not eating large meals; I refrain from caffeine; I don't drink soda anymore. It's boring, but I'm going for an endoscopy as soon as I can. Related Reading: smoking

I am a 46 year old female who over the past few months have been experiencing reflux on a constant basis. My symptoms are mostly the choking sensation in my throat, trying to clear my throat and heartburn. I have completely changed my diet, with no change in symptoms. I am underweight and have lost 8 lbs in one month. I find it difficult to sleep, even though I raised the head off my bed. I hate taking medications and would prefer natural treatments. This is a horrible feeling and I want it to go away.

I was diagnosed with acid reflux. I have taken all tests possible. I was hospitalized 8 times last year. No medications have been effective, only IV meds have helped with the nausea. Must Read Articles Related to Acid Reflux Disease (GERD)
