Viewer Comments: GERD - Proton Pump InhibitorsViewer Comments & ReviewsGERD - Proton Pump InhibitorsThe eMedicineHealth physician editors ask:Heartburn symptoms caused by GERD are usually relieved by drugs called proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, Nexium, Zegerid); however, proton pump inhibitors sometimes do not work well. If your symptoms were not relieved by treatment with proton pump inhibitors, can you please describe your GERD symptoms that did not improve? If you have other treatments that have been effective, please comment on those.

I was taking a medication for a stomach ulcer, then I had my gallbladder out. The ulcer healed so a couple of weeks after my operations, so I decided to stop taking the medication, as I thought I didn't need it. Acid came back up and burnt my esophagus. I started o be sick. I don't drink; I am not overweight. I do not smoke. I do not eat spicy food or a lot of chocolate, and no sweets or pop. I can't even have salads or an apple. I have no citrus fruits either.

I have been suffering with GERD for a few years now. I have been prescribed medications, which seem to only work for a short period of time. I think I've finally found a cure: A hot cup of green tea and ginseng tea, and a half-teaspoon of sugar. I have one in the morning and one after dinner. Sometime I add a table spoon of honey in my tea before I go to bed.

I also suffer from this problem. The feeling of something caught in my throat and the pain in my throat. I have tried all the pills, but prescription antacids work best. I still have to gulp down water in order to belch because it seems as if my food won't digest unless I do. This is frustrating me and I would like it to just go away. All this came about during the same time I found out that I was pre-diabetic.

I have "dealt" with GERD for about a year now. Bad days and mostly good days using mostly Tums, Zantach or Honey Drops. About a month ago all went south... The number 1 issue I have is the constant burning throat, the feeling that I got a small, jagged pebble stuck back there and the panic of not being able to swallow. Like I said, about a month ago this went from being manageable to downright horrible to deal with. I was scared to eat anything because I was not sure I could swallow it. I couldn't sleep because I was "focusing" on swallowing. I finally got Prilosec-OTC and after about 4 hours of my first dose I felt halfway human again. I have been on it 6 days and it has helped alot, however I am still having trouble sleeping. Today, the 7th-day is pissing me off, because I felt like I had a hope and here I sit at 11:58 PM with even worse throat issues. No sleep for a third night. I really would not wish feeling this way on anyone.

I have taken Prolisec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Nexium, and Rolaids, but do not get relief for acid reflux. Sometimes I get constant pain in my upper throat and larynx area. It causes me much pain, especially when eating and at night when I am trying to sleep. I do not know what to do next, and am very concerned that I have esophageal erosion, or lesions, or an ulcerated esophagus. I am seeking answers and help.

I use Nexium for my GERD, and most of my symptoms have been resolved. However, occasionally I experience extremely uncomfortable reflux that goes into my throat and nose. Fortunately, this only happens three or four times a year.

I was diagnosed with acid reflux many years ago. My initial symptom was throat pain and the sensation that something was stuck in my throat. I was prescribed Nexium 40mg twice a day. After 2 weeks the pain went away but the "lump" sensation in my throat remained. I stayed on my regiment of Nexium for a year before my dose was reduced to once a day. I had several test to see determine how bad my reflux was which showed "mild" reflux. My "lump" feeling never quite went away and sometimes felt worst after taking the meds. After talking with my doctor I decided to go off my meds to see what would happen. I was no worst off so I now take an over the counter Prevacid as needed. My only symptom to this day is the lump in the throat.

I have been prescribed Nexium. My problem is that I usually get a nasty cough, and very often I wake up at night. The cough lasts approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours after which everything goes back to normal. Nexium helped me at the beginning but now it is not working now.

I was finally diagnosed with GERD a number of months ago. My symptoms are: burning pain in stomach (a sort of a cramp), cough and bad taste in mouth in the morning particularly, stomach makes strange noises not unlike a cat! It is worse when I lay down, so it affects sleeping. I cannot sleep in anymore. I don't get the throat thing so am wondering do I actually have GERD or something else. I was diagnosed with GERD a month ago after being treated for h.pylori. I am now taking a medication for GERD and I was fine for two weeks, now my symptoms are back: vomiting, weight loss, stomach pain, loss of appetite all of them.
