Wilderness: Sunburn

Sunburn Overview

Sunburn is caused by excessive or prolonged exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the sun.

The time between 11 am and 2 pm contains the most powerful solar radiation exposure period. Sun protection or appropriate coverings should be worn at all times, but especially during this time to decrease risk of sunburn.

While use of a sunscreen containing a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater will block out most of the UV rays, sunscreen must be reapplied every 1-3 hours because perspiration washes it off the skin (even the so-called "waterproof" brands).

Adequate protective eyewear (sunglasses with UV protection) is also needed to prevent the cornea from burning.
