Asafoetida

How does Asafoetida work?

There is some scientific evidence that the chemicals in asafoetida might help treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and also protect against high cholesterol and high triglycerides. Chemicals called coumarins in asafoetida can thin the blood.

Are there safety concerns?

Asafoetida is safe for most people in the amounts typically found in foods. There is some evidence that it might be safe when used as medicine. In some people, asafoetida can cause swelling of the lips, burping, intestinal gas, diarrhea, headache, convulsions, blood disorders, and other side effects.

Asafoetida is UNSAFE for children due to the risk of blood disorders.

Do not use asafoetida if:

• You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
• You have a bleeding disorder.
• You have high or low blood pressure.
• You have a stomach or intestine infection, or condition.
• You have a history of convulsions or epilepsy.
