Doctors will often add an antiviral agent, such as acyclovir (Zovirax) or valacyclovir (Valtrex), because of a strong correlation between herpes simplex virus and Bell's palsy. If Lyme disease is possible in certain areas of the country, an antibiotic may be added, such as doxycycline. |

Bell palsy, more appropriately known as idiopathic facial paralysis (IFP), is believed to be a virally mediated cranial neuritis affecting the facial nerve due to reactivation of the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
