GENERIC NAME: CALCIUM CARBONATE ANTACID - SUSPENSION (KAL-see-um KAR-buh-nate)

USES: This medication is an antacid used to relieve upset stomach, heartburn or gas caused by stomach acid.

HOW TO USE: Take this by mouth as directed. Shake well before pouring each dose. Follow each dose with a full glass of water. Do not increase the dose or take this more often than prescribed. If you feel your dose is not effective, consult your doctor.

SIDE EFFECTS: This medication is generally well tolerated. Notify your doctor if you develop: loss of appetite, vomiting, dizziness, headache. Constipation and stomach cramps may occur. Notify your doctor if they continue or become severe. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Before taking this, tell your doctor if you have: kidney disease, any allergies. Avoid taking more doses than recommended. This medication is considered safe for use during pregnancy or breast-feeding when used as directed.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any nonprescription or prescription medication you use, including: certain antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines, quinolones), demeclocycline, methacycline, verapamil (a calcium channel blocker), quinidine, sodium polystyrene sulfonate (kayexalate), iron-containing products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, tiredness, and weakness.
