The best thing I ever did to help prevent the canker sores is to change my toothpaste -- one that does not have the foaming agent. I switched to Biotene toothpaste and know have about 80% less sores than I used to. Though right now I have one on the underwebbing of my tongue! Ouch!

I've suffered from canker sores all my life, and I find these things exceedingly helpful: Salt water rinse works miracles! It eases the pain and it helps catch them when it first forms. Baking soda rinse also helps with the bigger ones. Not so helpful with the pain, but it clears them up fairly quickly if you use it 3 times a day. I use zilactin-B the most out of all of the remedies for canker sores. It really stings when you first put it on, but it dries as a thin film over the sore and has a very powerful numbing agent that kills pain very effectively. I use it when I go to bed at night or if I'm eating something acidic. The film lasts a long time if you're not talking or eating (2-3 hours). If you are talking/eating it will last 30min-1hour. You can buy it at the drug store. Make sure its zilactin-B (the blue one). Hope this helps!

Although many people may not find this a "treatment" to canker sores I find in strangely relieving to the canker sores on the tongue and in the back parts of the mouth. Believe it or not... soda, it's not healthy (obviously) but those who drink it may find this useful. You see I just got a canker sore under my tongue and three on the top front of my mouth. (I usually only get one mind you), however when I drank soda the tongue's canker sore literally died. I couldn't feel the canker sore and my tongue is fine. However the front ones are invincible to this cure as they seem to be hidden from the acids that kill the canker sore, or the aftermath of a foreign bacterial removal, DON'T SWISH THE SODA TOWARDS THE CANKER SORE IT IS A HORRIBLE THING TO DO!!! Sincerely, Ryan

Debacterol is very effective, although painful for about 30 seconds or so. It works best, and least painfully, if I treat the canker as it's just starting and still very small. Usually when I treat immediately like this, the sore is completely pain-free by a few hours or the next day. However, sometimes I "chicken-out" out of fear of the pain of the Debacterol - but I usually regret this decision after a few days of suffering with the canker, and resort finally to the treatment. A large canker usually has to be treated several times over the course of a couple days...ouch! - But then when the canker pain subsides I am always amazed that I didn't submit to the Debacterol treatment sooner. My husband is a dentist and also a frequent canker sore sufferer, so we always have Debacterol available. I would advise anyone with frequent sores, especially large sores, to find a dentist or oral surgeon who treats with Debacterol - trading the weeks-long pain of bad canker sores for the short-lived pain of Debacterol is well worth it.

For canker sores, I use baking soda. It burns at first for about two minutes, then it feels better.
