OutlookYour recovery depends on the cause of your cirrhosis and whether you are able to remove or stop the cause. Liver transplantation remains the best treatment, but livers are available for very few people. Only 50 percent of people with severe alcoholic cirrhosis survive 2 years, and only 35 percent survive 5 years. Quitting drinking alcohol will slow the progress of the disease and may prevent complications. Your chance of recovery worsens after the onset of complications.
