What Are Some Possible Side Effects of Benadryl?

This is NOT a complete list of side effects reported with Benadryl. The doctor, health care professional, or pharmacist can discuss a more complete list of side effects.

Antihistamines are typically well tolerated, and serious side effects are rare. The more common side effects are usually mild and may go away.

  • Combination with a decongestant (such as Claritin D), may cause insomnia or anxiety.


  • Older antihistamines, such as Benadryl, are more likely to cause dizziness, excessive sedation, lightheadedness, and low blood pressure, particularly in elderly individuals.


  • Urine retention, constipation, dry mouth, headache, or blurred vision may occur.
