What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using ergoloid mesylates (Hydergine)?

You should not take this medication if you are allergic to ergoloid mesylates, or if you have a psychotic condition or long-standing mental illness.

Ergoloid mesylates will not treat dementia that is related to mental illness, mood disorders, or neurologic disease.

Before taking ergoloid mesylates, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:

  • circulation problems;
  • high blood pressure;
  • heart disease; or
  • a history of mental illness.

If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take this medication.

Ergoloid mesylates should not be used during pregnancy.

Ergoloid mesylates should not be given to a woman who is breast-feeding a baby.

How should I use ergoloid mesylates (Hydergine)?

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Ergoloid mesylates is usually taken 3 times per day. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Call your doctor if you have any changes in memory, alertness, mood, appetite, energy level, or ability to care for yourself.

Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits to make sure ergoloid mesylates is the best treatment for your condition. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

It may take up to 4 weeks of using this medicine before your symptoms improve. For best results, keep using the medication as directed. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 3 weeks of treatment.

Store ergoloid mesylates at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
