Poison ivy is a plant that has the potential to produce a painful rash that is red, itchy, and may include blisters or bumps. The offending resin in poison ivy that provokes an allergic reaction is called urushiol. Topical treatments may help soothe redness and itching. Applying cool compresses may provide relief. A severe poison ivy rash may require oral steroids for treatment.
