I have had interstitial cystitis (IC) for about 7 years now. I initially had several urinary tract infections (UTI). My urologist did a scope to eliminate bladder cancer. Fortunately, there was no cancer, and I finally tested negative for a UTI. But my symptoms continued. I decided to go to my gynecologist and as soon as I told her my symptoms she diagnosed me with IC. She informed me about a 'rescue solution.' That is where they insert lidocaine, sodium bicarbonate and heparin into your bladder. I had this done 3 consecutive times within a week and then when the IC flares up. I have been fortunate that it only flares up about every 3 months. It lasts for 7 to 10 days, then it dissipates. It is difficult during that time, but luckily it doesn't last any longer. Also I take UTA pills when my IC acts up. That also seems to help.

The pain is awful. I have tried all medications. I am now looking into Botox injections for bladder pain. I hear that Botox gives a high success rate if you can get it.
