Job Training for People With Schizophrenia

Topic Overview

People who have schizophrenia sometimes have a hard time finding or keeping a job. Job training and vocational therapy can help you get the skills you need for a job.

The first part of job training usually is finding out what interests and skills you have. Finding work that you enjoy doing will increase your chance of success.

You may have an interview to assess your interests and job skills. You also may have tests to see what you can do physically. These will help determine which types of jobs may be best for you.

You may benefit from training for a specific job and receiving support services as you begin to work.

A job helps you in many ways:

  • You earn money, which helps you stay or become independent.
  • You gain self-esteem and a sense of purpose.
  • You interact with other people and may develop a larger social network.
