When to Seek Medical Care

You should contact your health-care provider if you have a sore throat, especially if it is associated with a fever or a rash. Though many cases of sore throat may be caused by a viral infection, your health-care provider will need to confirm that you do not have "strep throat" and scarlet fever, which are illnesses that require prescription medications to prevent potential complications and shorten the disease.
