Definition of Restless leg syndrome
Restless leg syndrome: An uncomfortable creeping, crawling, tingling, pulling, twitching, tearing, aching, throbbing, prickling or grabbing sensation in the calves that occurs while sitting or while lying down. Whatever the nature of the sensation, the result is an uncontrollable urge to relieve it by moving the legs.
Restless leg syndrome is a common cause of painful legs. The leg pain typically eases with motion of the legs and becomes more noticeable at rest. There is worsening of symptoms during the early evening or later at night. The nighttime worsening of symptoms in persons with restless legs syndrome often leads to insomnia.
The syndrome is not uncommon. At least 12 million people in US alone are estimated to have it but only about 1 in 10 of them has been given the diagnosis, according to a survey of over 23,000 people. About 70% of chronic sufferers said it takes them an average of a half hour to fall asleep at night and 60% said they awoke at least three times a night. These sleep disturbances appeared to take a toll on everyday life. Nearly half of the chronic sufferers said they often had trouble concentrating the next day. A similar proportion reported a tendency to become depressed.
Medications are available to relieve symptoms. Avoiding certain substances and stimulants, like nicotine, may also help.
