July 28, 2014 -- The FDA has approved over-the-counter Flonase Allergy Relief, or fluticasone propionate 50 mcg nasal spray, for the treatment of hay fever or upper respiratory allergies, its maker GlaxoSmithKline announced.
Flonase Allergy Relief is the first and only over-the-counter nasal spray intended for relief of all nasal and eye-related allergy symptoms, including runny nose, sneezing, itchy nose, nasal congestion, and itchy and watery eyes, according to a company news release Thursday.
An estimated 50 million people in the United States have nasal allergies, often leading to fatigue, trouble sleeping , learning and attention problems, and performance trouble at work or school, the company said.
The active ingredient in Flonase Allergy Relief, fluticasone propionate, was approved as a prescription medicine in 1994.
The nasal spray will be available over the counter in early 2015, according to GlaxoSmithKline.
