Definition of Avascular necrosis of the femoral headAvascular necrosis of the femoral head: See Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is a pathologic process that results from interruption of blood supply to the bone. It is also called aseptic necrosis or osteonecrosis. Conditions associated with aseptic necrosis include alcoholism, diabetes mellitus, extended periods of steroid usage, sickle cell disease, Gaucher's disease, and trauma.
