Thomas, Lewis: (1913-1993) American physician, biologist, and eminent essayist. Thomas graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. He was dean of the medical schools at Yale and New York University and chief executive officer of the Sloan-Kettering in New York City. In 1971, he began contributing a regular essay, "Notes of a Biology Watcher," to the New England Journal of Medicine. Some of these essays, loosely modeled on those of Montaigne, were published in 1974 as "The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher" which won the National Book Award. Other essay collections included "The Medusa and the Snail" (1979) and "Late Night Thoughts on Listening to Mahler's Ninth Symphony" (1983). Dr. Thomas managed to practice medicine and literature in a seamless way.
