Definition of Sinus headache

Sinus headache: A headache caused by pressure within the sinus cavities of the head, usually in connection with infection of the sinuses. Signs and symptoms of sinus headache include pain and tenderness in the sinus area, discharge from the nose, and sometimes swelling of the face.

Vascular headaches are often mistaken for sinus headaches. Migraine can also cause head pain and nasal drainage and be triggered by changes in the weather or season.

Treatment of sinus headache is by treating the underlying condition, which may be allergic or infectious, and by nasal vasoconstrictors and analgesic (pain-relieving) medication, such as aspirin (in adults only), acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium. Analgesics containing caffeine may be stronger.
