Definition of National Institute of Environmental Health Science

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS): A part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States.

NIEHS states that its mission is to "reduce the burden of human illness and dysfunction from environmental causes by defining how environmental exposures, genetic susceptibility, and age interact to affect an individual's health."

NIEHS is unusual in its location. NIEHS is in the Research Triangle Park, a science and technology hub created by the state of North Carolina between the towns of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. NIH is headquartered and largely based in Bethesda, Maryland.
