Sprains and Strains: An injury to a ligament is called a sprain, while an injury to a muscle or tendon is called a strain. Symptoms and signs include pain, swelling, bruising, and decreased range of motion. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the injury is the standard treatment for sprains and strains.
Achilles Tendon Rupture The Achilles tendon, or tendon calcaneus, is a large ropelike band of fibrous tissue in the back of the ankle that connects the powerful calf muscles to the heel bone. Symptoms and signs of an Achilles tendon rupture include sudden, severe pain, the sound of a loud pop, swelling, and a gap 2 inches above the heel bone. Treatment may include surgery, casting, and physical therapy.
