GENERIC NAME: SULFADIAZINE/TRIMETHOPRIM - ORAL (sul-fa-DYE-ah-zeen try-METH-oh-prim)

Medication Uses | How To Use | Side Effects | Precautions | Drug Interactions | Overdose | Notes | Missed Dose | Storage

USES: This combination medication is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections including those infections that affect the bladder (e.g., cystitis) and kidneys (e.g., pyelonephritis).

HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth usually once daily, or as directed by your doctor. The dosage and length of treatment is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals. Continue to take this medication until the full-prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. It is important to drink plenty of water while being treated with this antibiotic. Doing so may help prevent certain side effects (e.g., crystaluria, kidney stones). Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve in 5 to 7 days.

SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, and stomach upset may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: rash, vision changes, tingling or numbness of the hands/feet, mental/mood changes, trouble urinating or painful urination, ringing in the ears. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising or bleeding, pale skin, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, stomach pain, unusual weakness/fatigue, persistent sore throat or fever, seizures, severe rash with open sores. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
