I have had hypothyroidism since 1990. Before being diagnosed, I could not wake up less than 12 hours after going to sleep. My doctors did not listen to me and told me that I was just lazy. I never gained weight and nothing was ever wrong with my hair, but I did have dry, flaky skin. I went to a new doctor who found out I have hypothyroidism.

I was diagnosed with antibodies for both Graves and Hashimoto's diseases about 12 years ago. My thyroid was supposed to have been deactivated with radioactive iodine.

Tired all the time, fatigue after smallest exertion, big weight gain, muscle aches and pains, dry skin and hair, poor sleep, depression - with classic symptoms of Hashimoto's. I was diagnosed very quickly by my GP, who told me that tablets he prescribed would take me back to 'normal' immediately. This has never happened.

When I was 30, during a gynecological appointment, my doctor found that my thyroid had a growth on it, or that it had grown larger. At that time they told me I had to have the thyroid partially or fully removed depending on what they found. Since they didn't find any thyroid cancer, they only removed 85% of it. I have been on Synthroid ever since

I am 41 and was diagnosed at 23 with a small goiter and hyperthyroidism. Over the years I have been on and off medication. at the age of 36 I was diagnosed with Grave's Disease, and left to my own devices. I wasn't sent to a specialist or anything. Never understood what it really was nor what would happen to my thyroid over the years to come. I went back to the same GP who sent me for an ultrasound in January 2011 to discover two small "cysts" on the right side, one being 3.4ml and the other 3.8ml.. Just recently I went to my new GP who sent me for another ultrasound to check the known "cysts" only to discover I have three more "cysts" on the left side of my thyroid. The smallest is 4.7ml, another 5.2ml and the larger being 6.3ml. I am yet to see an Endochrinologist to find out what is to be done with these "cysts". It's a very daunting thing to know now what possibly lays ahead. The worse part is the not knowing. To anyone who is suffering from thyroid problems, don't give up hope. If you are not happy with your treatment, seek other ulternatives. The side effects from a thyroid problem is not pleasant. Always know you are not alone as there are thousands of us out there with different yet similar stories. If you find yourself a good doctor stick with them. Please be sure to ask your GP for information and ask questions about your illness as you are better off being pro-active in your treatment and understanding what is going on. Use your internet to research your problems but don't take everything you read on board. Most information given comes from thousands of case studies by doctors who specialise in our problem. Wishing each of you all the best.

Before I was diagnosed with thyroid disease, I experienced sweating, nervousness, pains in hands and feet, and dry mouth.

Hi! I'm a 44 year-old male. My swollen right hand few months ago, now just not feeling right in the head, sort of dizzy, heart pounding, constantly clearing throat, 3 doctors said it was anxiety. I'm finally getting tests. Found a high infection but source is unknown, thyroid came back showing problems. I have more tests to be done, glad to find others have similar problems.

I am a male of 62years age. I had thyroid problem about 6-7 years ago. My first symptom was weight loss and there was lot of sweating at night with loss of sleep. Three to four months later, doctors could not diagnose it. Some say that it is due to diabetes, but I was sure that this problem was not due to diabetes. So, I started checking all medicines leaflets which I was using for diabetes. I reported my findings to the doctor & he took the blood test & found that there was a thyroid problem which was too much active. I was cured and I am ok now.
