Weight-loss surgery

If you have type 2 diabetes and a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35, weight loss surgery may help you lose weight and improve your type 2 diabetes control.¹

Surgery for diabetes complications

Some complications from type 2 diabetes may need surgical treatment. For example:

• Surgery to remove the vitreous gel (vitrectomy) may be needed for diabetic retinopathy.
• Foot problems caused by diabetic neuropathy may lead to a need for amputation.
• Cardiovascular problems may require heart surgery.
