I’m a 15-year-old girl, and I’m trying to find out about birth control. My friend at school told me she’s been taking a hormonal birth control pill called ethinyl estradiol since she was 13 because it helps her severe menstrual cramps. I didn’t know birth control could treat other conditions. What else is birth control used for?

Birth control pills are used for contraception to prevent pregnancy. But they are also used to treat a number of other conditions, including:

Birth control pills can also prevent the occurrence of menstrual migraines, and reduce the risk of developing anemia, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cysts.
