What is oritavancin (Orbactiv)?

Oritavancin is an antibiotic that is used to treat severe skin infections caused by bacteria.

Oritavancin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What are the possible side effects of oritavancin (Orbactiv)?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Some side effects may occur during the injection. Tell your caregiver right away if you feel warm, itchy, dizzy, light-headed, sweaty, or have chills, tremors, chest pain, back pain, a rash, or redness in your face.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody (even if it occurs months after you receive oritavancin); or
  • pain, tenderness, redness, swelling, or warmth anywhere in your body.

What is the most important information I should know about oritavancin (Orbactiv)?

Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before receiving oritavancin (Orbactiv)?

You should not receive oritavancin if you are allergic to it, or if you will be using "unfractionated" heparin within 5 days after your receive oritavancin injection.

Tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to similar medicines such as dalbavancin, telavancin, or vancomycin.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Oritavancin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.

How is oritavancin given (Orbactiv)?

Oritavancin is given as an infusion into a vein, usually as a single dose. A healthcare provider will give you this injection.

This medicine must be given slowly, and the infusion can take at least 3 hours to complete.

Call your doctor promptly if your symptoms do not improve after receiving oritavancin.

Oritavancin can affect the results of certain medical tests for up to 5 days after your injection. Tell any doctor who treats you that you have been treated with oritavancin.

What happens if I miss a dose (Orbactiv)?

Since oritavancin is given in a single dose, it does not have a daily dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose (Orbactiv)?

Since this medicine is given by a healthcare professional in a medical setting, an overdose is unlikely to occur.

What should I avoid after receiving oritavancin (Orbactiv)?

For at least 5 days after receiving oritavancin, avoid using heparin.

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor before using anti-diarrhea medicine.
