Cauliflower ear is a condition that results after a traumatic injury to the ear. The area of trauma forms a hematoma (a patch of blood under the skin), and becomes very swollen. Boxers, wrestlers, and people who practice mixed martial arts are most likely to receive traumatic injury to the ear that results in cauliflower ear. It is very important to receive prompt evaluation and treatment for this condition so that cartilage does not overgrow and result in deformity. Plastic surgery may be necessary to restore the shape of the ear.
