Picture of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD)
Frontotemporal dementia, or frontal lobe dementia, is a degenerative condition that affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. This kind of dementia is not associated with the formation of amyloid plaques that are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. Frontotemporal dementia is associated with neurofibrillary tangles comprised of abnormal tau protein. These tangles interfere with the normal function of brain cells and may contribute to cell death.
