Picture of Hand Anatomy

The hand is composed of 38 bones. There are 28 phalanges (finger bones) and 10 metacarpal bones. Each finger has 3 phalanges and the thumb has 2. There are synovial joints between the metacarpals and the phalanges, which are covered with articular cartilage. The anatomy of the hands is so intricate and the hands perform such essential functions, any serious injury to them has the potential to limit function. For these reasons, any severe injury to the hands needs to be evaluated and treated by the appropriate specialists.
