Temporary henna tattoos, or black henna tattoos, can trigger allergic skin reactions in some individuals. Affected skin may even become infected or develop scars. The offending agent in black henna is p-phenylenediamine (PPD). Natural henna is brown, red, or orange-brown in color. Other substances must be added to natural henna to create additional colors. Although natural henna and PDD are US FDA-approved to color hair, these agents are not approved for application to the skin.
