Herpes simplex type 2, also known as human herpesvirus 2 (HHV-2) or genital herpes, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that typically causes outbreaks of sores on and around the genitals. There is no cure for genital herpes. The infection stays with the affected person for life. However, antiviral medications may reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks. People with compromised immune systems may be prone to more frequent genital herpes outbreaks and more complications from the infection. Severely immunocompromised individuals with genital herpes may develop a brain infection known as encephalitis.
