Picture of Tonsils

The palatine tonsils are patches of tissue located in the back of the throat. They are part of the lymphatic system and help the body to fight infections. The removal of the tonsils does not seem to make one more susceptible to infections. Tonsils of individuals vary widely in size. They become enlarged when an infection is present.
