An ingrown hair is a hair that is trapped under the skin, creating red or tan bump. Improper hair-removal techniques are the most common cause of ingrown hairs. Symptoms and signs include inflammation, pain, and itching. Treatment may include exfoliation, topical steroid or retinoid creams, topical antibiotics, or using a needle or scalpel to dislodge the ingrown hair.
